福岡 指南
Fukuoka occupies the northern tip of Kyushu, facing the Korea Strait across water that has made it a gateway between Japan and the Asian continent for well over a thousand years. That orientation still shapes the city today: the food is bolder, the pace is looser, and the sense of being somewhere genuinely distinct from Tokyo or Osaka is immediate. Hakata, the older mercantile district on the eastern bank of the Naka River, and Tenjin, the commercial centre to the west, form the twin poles of daily life, connected by a subway system compact enough that most visitors find the city unusually easy to navigate. The Fukuoka Subway Pass makes that network accessible across a single ticket, which suits a city where the distances between neighbourhoods are short but the contrasts between them are sharp.
The waterfront at Momochihama is where Fukuoka announces itself most visibly to the skyline. Fukuoka Tower, the tallest seaside tower in Japan at 234 metres, rises from reclaimed land beside the former site of the 1989 Asia-Pacific Exposition, and its mirrored surface reflects the bay in a way that changes character entirely between a clear afternoon and a night when the city lights are up. The surrounding area, sometimes called Seaside Momochi, has a deliberately open, modern feel that contrasts with the dense lanes of Nakasu or the covered shopping arcades of Tenjin.
