Your guide to Trogir

Your guide to Trogir tickets

Few places in the Mediterranean compress so much history into so small a space as Trogir. The old town sits on a tiny island in the Adriatic, connected to the Croatian mainland by one bridge and to the island of Ciovo by another, its medieval street plan essentially unchanged since the Venetians fortified it centuries ago. UNESCO recognised the ensemble in 1997, and the designation feels earned rather than ceremonial: the Cathedral of Saint Lawrence, begun in the thirteenth century, contains a Romanesque portal by the sculptor Radovan that art historians consider one of the finest in the region, its carved figures worn smooth by salt air and time.

The old town is compact enough to cross on foot in ten minutes, yet dense enough to occupy an afternoon without effort. The Kamerlengo Fortress anchors the western tip of the island, its towers offering views across the channel to Ciovo and, on clear days, toward the Dalmatian islands dissolving into the Adriatic haze. The Riva, the waterfront promenade, fills with the particular rhythm of a Croatian coastal town: fishing boats moored alongside charter yachts, cafe chairs angled toward the water, the smell of grilled fish drifting from restaurants tucked into the lanes behind. Trogir is not a large resort and does not try to be one. Its appeal is architectural and atmospheric, and the town wears both qualities without apparent effort.
